Question from Lubbock, Texas, USA:

My six-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost a year ago. Because they do not have insurance, my daughter and son-in-law have not taken her back to the endocrinologist since she was diagnosed. She had seizures about two weeks ago when her blood sugar dropped too low and now my daughter says she has had a harder time managing it because it roller coasters badly. Still, no doctor. I am concerned because I know that my granddaughter does not eat breakfast or get her first dose of insulin until around 11 a.m. because of their schedules. Should I be concerned?

Yes, your granddaughter needs care for her diabetes now. It can be difficult trying to intervene, but your love and concern for your granddaughter should guide you to do the best thing for her. Has the family contacted the endocrinologist by phone to ask for advice and assistance or a referral? If your granddaughter is in school, you may ask a social worker or school nurse, teacher for information about health care in your area for children without insurance, and for other programs that may provide health care for children. You might even ask your doctor for information about who might be able to help your granddaughter in the area.

Children with diabetes (as all children) need health care. For a child with diabetes, it is crucial that she obtain care as soon as possible. Your granddaughter needs assistance with insulin dose adjustment that is typical in the first year of diabetes, as well as balancing food and exercise/routine to keep her safe and healthy.
