Research: Causes and Prevention
Question from Plainfield, Illinois, USA:
My son has food allergies to milk, eggs, wheat, and yeast. He has also has asthma when he gets a cold. He was diagnosed with acute idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) when he was about one and a half. This resolved in about four months. He is now two. There is no history of type 1 in our family. However, his paternal grandfather has type 2. We also have many other allergies in the family. Do these factors put him in a higher risk group for developing type 1 diabetes? Is there a considerable connection from the food allergies and ITP to type 1 diabetes?
Answer:
While ITP is an autoimmune disorder, there is no known increased risk of type 1 diabetes. Likewise for food allergies or any other allergies for that mater – no increased risk of type 1 diabetes mellitus.
