Question from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia:
My sister has had diabetes since the age of nine. We need to know whether the lactose in milk will change her blood sugar level. She was hyperglycemic a few days back because she forgot to inject her night insulin. She was admitted in hospital to stabilize her blood sugar. Will the lactose in the milk that she is drinking affect her blood sugar or should she just change to unsweetened soy milk?

All milk – human, cow or soy – has sugar in it. The carbohydrates in it are all “sugar,” just not glucose. You need to count the carbohydrates and take them into account when dosing insulin. One form is not better than the other for diabetes.
