Question from Campton, Kentucky, USA:

Every time my two year old son gets a cold or virus his sugar goes high and sometimes really low. Does this sound like early stages of diabetes or does this typically happen to all children when they get sick? Is it possible for a child without diabetes to have a blood sugar of 356 mg/dl [19.8 mmol/L] if he is sick with virus?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

A blood sugar of 356 mg/dl [19.8 mmol/L] is never normal, even with illness. I would discuss this with your physician at once since this could represent diabetes.
