Question from Vadodara, India:

My almost six-year-old daughter has type 1 diabetes. She was diagnosed at the agree of three and taking insulin. Is it safe for her to consume stevia?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Stevia (sometimes called Rebaudioside A or rebiana) is now generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. FDA as a food additive and table top sweetener. When something is generally recognized as safe by the FDA, it means that experts have agreed that it is safe for use by the public in appropriate amounts.

Stevia is several hundred times sweeter than sugar. It comes from the sweetest part of the stevia plant and is an ingredient in many foods that you can buy at the store. Here in the U.S., one of the newest stevia based sweeteners in the supermarket is called “Truvia”.
