ADHD, Behavior
Question from Chappell, Maine, USA:
How does one discipline a child with type 1 who also has ADHD?
Answer:
Parenting a child with ADHD and diabetes can be a bit of a challenge. In part, this is because children with ADHD are distractible and impulsive. The key issues are:
Do not assume that your child will attend to their body’s symptoms of highs or lows. So, if you see behavior that concerns you, check your child’s blood sugars.
Children with ADHD need adult supervision and monitoring around diabetes tasks more than children without ADHD. Don’t be upset that they need the supervision, just give it to them.
The more structured and organized you are, the better off your child will be.
