Question from Ireland:
How long does it take for a child with diabetes to be accepted as “normal?” How should parents deal with school teachers for keeping blood sugars as normal as at home? What percentage of children having type 1 diabetes live completely normal lives, get married and have no complications?
Answer:
These questions are very broad and impossible to answer briefly. However, you should discuss your child’s needs with her teachers in conjunction with support from her diabetes team. The team will probably also have some written materials that would be helpful. Most will also offer to visit the teachers with you or separately. The rates of complications vary and are tightly tied to degree of control of blood glucose over the years. However, there are many people with diabetes living a happy family life.
