I am working with a fifth grade boy who has insulin-dependent diabetes. He is refusing to come to school and when he is forced to, he panics and becomes aggressive. Is there any indication that his refusal to attend school has any relationship to his diabetes?

The most likely answer is “no.” However, that is impossible to say without a comprehensive interview with this young man. The diabetes-related issues that would be worth exploring are:

Is he afraid of having a hypoglycemic episode in school?
Has he ever had a hypoglycemic episode in school?
Do his peers know he has diabetes?
Does he get teased because he has diabetes?
Is he singled-out in any way because of his diabetes such that he feels different than his peers?
