Question from Indiana, USA:

I have a 15 year old that was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about 3 months ago. He is on 3 Humalog and 17 Lente in the morning before breakfast and before dinner he takes 2 Humalog and 7 Lente. He has continuously been running highs all the time at dinner usually between 250 and 350 and sometimes highs at lunch. His doctor suggested that we try NPH instead of Lente before breakfast. If this works, will we notice a change in his blood sugars right away, or will it take a few days?

Answer:

Usually right away. But if the blood sugars around the clock have been high for a while, it may take a few weeks or so to see a change.
