Question from Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada:

I have a nephew who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 9 months old. He is now 3 1/2 years and the last few days clumps of hair have been falling out. Is this hair loss a result of his diabetes?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

If his diabetes control has been particularly difficult, it is possible that this can cause hair loss. However, there are other causes and it would be helpful to discuss this with the boy’s diabetes team or endocrinologist.
