Diagnosis and Symptoms
Question from Hotmail.com:
I have a teenage daughter who is not overweight and we’re not sure if she’s MODY or Type 2. Are there any tests other than genetic testing that could help in the determination?
Answer:
MODY or Maturity Onset Diabetes in the Young is itself a term for one form of Type 2 diabetes. There are tests that can identify the various forms of MODY, for example that for deficiency of the enzyme Hexokinase in the case of the MODY2 variants; but they are expensive and only available in a few specialised laboratories. An elevated serum C-peptide level would suggest Type 2 Diabetes. Much more importantly making a specific diagnosis, although it may help some in genetic counselling, does not really have any impact on clinical management.
