Question from Mission Hills, California, USA:
I know a six year old boy who was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He is taking insulin twice a day. Unfortunately, he lives in Guatemala and has no specialist to see him. Will he always need to take injections? Could he take pills if he gets his diabetes under control?
Answer:

Typically, a child that is six years old has type 1 diabetes and will require insulin injections to stay alive. Withdrawal of insulin will likely be life-threatening. Taking pills for diabetes is not an option for children with type 1 diabetes.
