Aches and Pains, Stress

advertisement
Question from Brooklyn, New York, USA:

I’m 11 years old and have diabetes for 1 year. I have been on a pump for 8 months. I injured my growth plate in my thumb and have been in a cast for 2 weeks. It has been very painful and my hand swells. My blood sugars have been very high since my injury. Can this be related to my injury? If so, how? My doctor says no.

Answer:

Pain causes stress hormones to be released which in turn causes high blood sugars. Inactivity (in an effort to avoid pain) also causes high sugars.
