Blood Tests and Insulin Injections, Hyperglycemia and DKA
Question from Boca Raton, Florida, USA:
At a local diabetes pump support group meeting, one member said that when their blood sugar is very high, rather than take a bolus, she injects insulin into the muscle in order to bring blood sugar down rapidly, and then changes her infusion set. Is this safe? The person said she either injects into her calf or her forearm.
Answer:
It’s perfectly fine to inject insulin into a muscle for a slightly faster absorption. If one thinks that the pump is not functioning, there’s a kink in the line, blockage, air bubble, etc., any injection of insulin, subcutaneously or intramuscularly, would be okay, as long as it is followed by changing the set-up and problem-solving the pump/catheter problem.
