Is phenylalanine safe for my wife during her pregnancy? She is in her 33rd week and was told her blood sugar level was at 176 mg/dl [9.8 mmol/L].
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
Phenylalanine is an amino acid used as a sugar substitute because it tastes sweet. It is not sugar and will not have an effect on blood glucose. However, a blood glucose of 176 mg/dl [9.8 mmol/L] is high and needs to be managed. She should speak with her physician further about diet and possibly the need for additional treatment.
