Question from India:
Is the oversecretion of cortisol common in type 2 diabetics who are insulin resistant? In view of getting central obesity due to cortisol oversecretion, can stress stimulated cortisol oversecretion be the basic reasoning for getting insulin resistance?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
A very small percentage of patients with diabetes have cortisol hypersecretion as a cause of their diabetes. I would say it is less than 1 to 2%. Only occasionally do we see a patient who has elevated cortisol secretion with secondary, rather than primary, diabetes.
