Blood Tests and Insulin Injections
Question from Poland:
Is there a meter for checking one’s blood sugar that does not require a blood sample? Or, could you recommend a meter that is easy to use and requires a very small blood sample?
Answer:
As of June 2004, there are no devices that are FDA approved and that do not require blood from finger-sticks for glucose monitoring to be used in making clinical decisions about diabetes management (e.g., adjusting insulin dose).
Specific meters you might be interested in trying are the Freestyle Flash, the Ascensia Contour or the BD Logic and Latitude,. All three require small samples and are easy to use. The Flash and the Contour have both been approved for Alternate Site Testing.
