Aches and Pains

Question from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA:

Is there a relationship between compartment syndrome and diabetes? Is nerve pain associated with this?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Yes, patients with diabetes have more symptoms with compartment syndrome, specifically, compartment syndrome involving the risk also known as carpal tunnel syndrome. It seems that the high blood sugars add to the swelling of the tissues within the connective tissue sheath that encases the nerve. This results in the entrapment syndrome. Pain and loss of strength are both part of the syndrome. The symptoms can be treated with avoidance of repetitive movements that exacerbate the pain, the use of splints, or surgical correction by making an incision into the sheath that surrounds the nerve, thereby releasing the pressure on the nerve.
