Meal Planning, Food and Diet
Question from Duluth, Georgia, USA:
Is there a scale to determine how much a given calorie intake will raise the blood sugar in mg/dl?
Answer:
Different foods cause different increases in blood glucose. Almost all carbohydrates eaten turn to blood sugar while less than 50% of proteins and less than 30% of fats turn to blood sugar. Even though fats have more calories, they tend to raise the blood sugar less and more slowly. The best way to learn how your body responds to foods is to check your blood sugar before eating, write down what and how much you eat and test your blood sugar 1-2 hours after the meal. The most important thing to know is how your body responds to food rather than a table of generalities.
