Question from Calabasas, California, USA:

Is there a special mouth rinse that diabetics should use after brushing their teeth?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Many persons with diabetes will have decreased saliva or altered salivary composition. This might be due to the disease itself or due to a medication side effect. The preferred program should be to use Biotene toothpaste and alcohol-free mouthwash. The mouthwash is not a requirement, but helps control some of the bacteria on the tongue. Please also use a tongue scraper. This company also has a spray or gel if your mouth gets very dry and a xylitol sweetened chewing gum that helps control cavities as well as stimulate saliva. These products are available at most all your retail drug stores and, if not on the shelf, you may order direct or the pharmacy may order it for you.
