Question from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA:
Is there any correlation between the diet in the first year of a child and the onset of diabetes?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
Breast feeding is somewhat protective, probably by avoiding some cow milk proteins/antigens. Avoiding wheat/gluten, in some studies, also offers some protection against getting diabetes. Both are probably weak protectors, however, since other factors are stronger. Exclusive breast feeding has so many benefits and so few risks, that this is highly preferable for many reasons and so should be the “standard” recommendation.
