Question from Carrollton, Ohio, USA:

At least once a month for the past few months, my 10 year old son will wake up in the morning and soon after breakfast (sometimes he has no breakfast), he will get a very bad headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and will take a nap or two. The symptoms will last about 24 hours. A friend suggested to check his blood glucose level, and was 106 mg/dl [5.9 mmol/L] when he was feeling fine.

He was sick again this morning so I got my friend’s meter. and his blood glucose it was 87 mg/dl [4.8 mmol/L]. He said it seemed a little low and wanted some orange juice. I gave him a little juice. and about 30 minutes later on our way to my mom’s, he vomited it up. He said he felt better.

When we got to my mom’s he started to play with his friends and even at some food. This is the first time he has every came out of this so quickly, so I stopped at my friend’s house to check his level, and l it was 130 mg/dl [7.2 mmol/L]. What do you think? What is a good level for a so-called normal 10 year old boy? I don’t know what to do, and he seems to be sick a lot.

Normal blood sugar level are typically between 65-110 mg/dl [3.6-6.1 mmol/L]. I would make an appointment with your pediatrician to review the symptoms you describe.
