Question from Virginia, USA:

My 11 year old son has type 1 diabetes and has had it for 3 years; he is not doing well at it at all. His numbers are always high. Is there anything we can do? Can he get a transplant or is there something else we can do to keep him from having medical problems in the future? There has to be something we can do.

Answer:

Maintaining good control in diabetes is not easy. It isn’t just about insulin and diet, but it’s about lifestyle and how it affects blood glucose control. Once the honeymoon phase is over, often glycaemic control becomes more challenging.

It is well worth airing your concerns with your diabetes team, who will be able to look at the specific problems you have and be able to advise you accordingly.

The main thing is never to give up hope nut to keep trying different things, and keep working together with the diabetes team who are there to help and support you.
