Question from Wynne, Arkansas, USA:

My 12 year old son was just diagnosed with type1 diabetes, and, even though he is eating well, sometimes he still gets hungry between meals. What are some good snack ideas for him? He is tired of sugar-free Jell-O.

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Hopefully, since your son is newly diagnosed, his hunger will subside once the blood sugars come under tighter control. All foods can fit into your son’s meal plan. It’s easy to get into a food rut with regard to free foods or low carb foods. Some other healthy food options might include: baby carrots with low fat ranch dressing, small servings of roasted peanuts, popcorn, low calorie sodas or unsweetened teas. If your son is still hungry after supplementing with low carb foods, talk with his registered dietitian on his diabetes team about increasing the calories in his meal plan. Good luck with the meal planning.
