Genetics and Heredity
Question from Adelaide, South Australia:
My 15 year old son has type1 diabetes, diagnosed at age seven, and our 13 year old son has had many days over the last 18 months when he has not been himself. He has had islet cell antibodies at 80 and GAD antibodies around 12 for the last 18 months. We have been tested for haplotype matching and the both boys are a match for DR 4/3, mother DR 4/4 father DR 3/2. The boys match on all other haplotype results. We have a strong family history of type 1 diabetes. What are the chances that our 13 year old son will develop diabetes? Are there any other tests?
Answer:
Chances are relatively high that your 13 year old son will develop diabetes, but certainly not 100%. You should consult with your pediatric endocrinologist for more detailed risk analysis individually. There are many superb Australian pediatric diabetologists available.
