Question from Whitehall, New York, USA:

My 19 year old boyfriend, who has had type 1 diabetes since he was two, has lost close to 30 pounds in the last two months even though he hasn’t changed his diet or his exercise. Is something really wrong?

Answer:

The first thing to think about is whether he has had poor blood sugar control during that time. Poor blood sugar control will allow glucose to be spilled in the urine and prevents those calories from being used. Precipitous weight loss can be the result. He needs to get to his physician to review his problems as there can be a variety of other causes for the symptoms. However, more information needs to be collected to determine the cause.
