Question from The State of Washington, USA:

My 19 year old daughter was diagnosed with type1 diabetes three years ago. Her brother is now 25 and ran a blood sugar of 153 mg/dl [8.3 mmol/L] one evening, 73 mg/dl [4.1 mmol/L], another a few days later, was 114 mg/dl [ 6.3 mmol/L], and a week later, was 171 mg/dl [9.5 mmol/L]. We used a meter for these readings. Is this an indication that he developing diabetes? Does what a person who does not have diabetes eat give them high blood sugars like they would a person who has diabetes?

If you are concerned about your son, have him checked out by your doctor. It is easy to sort out, and will stop you being worried about him.

[Editor’s comment: These values are not diagnostic of diabetes unless the higher values were done whilst fasting. See Classification and Diagnosis of Diabetes for more information about the diagnosis of diabetes.
