Question from Kuwait:
My child has type 1 diabetes, eats three meals per day, and her before meal glucose levels are within normal range, but sometimes her two-hour postprandial blood glucose is higher than 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L]. Is it normal? What is the normal range for postprandial glucose levels?
Answer:

All children with diabetes have a temporary post-meal increase in their blood sugars. This should return to a normal level within two to three hours after a meal which indicates that the mealtime dosing of insulin has been calculated correctly.
