Question from Atwater, California, USA:
My child had to sit out part of recess because of misbehavior, his blood sugar was over 260 mg/dl [14.4 mmol/L], and I don’t know if the blood sugar could contribute to this. Does high blood sugar make him more likely to have discipline problems (inattention, difficulty focusing, etc.)?

I’ve not seen any definitive paper, but many of my patients’ families have noted this association. There is some scientific evidence for a blunting of attention when the glucose is high.
