Could my child be hypoglycemic if his fasting glucose level fasting was 47 mg/dl [2.6 mmol/L]? We did a second test the next day about two hours after he had eaten and his blood sugar was 157 mg/dl [8.7 mmol/L]. One day later, the doctor wanted to test him while he was fasting and he was 137 mg/dl [7.6 mmol/L]. Could he be diabetic?

Your child probably does NOT have diabetes. But that is NOT a diagnosis that can be made over the Internet. Follow up with the doctor.

Home glucose monitors are NOT the way that diabetes should be diagnosed; they are not accurate enough. And, why did you check him? Whose meter? Was it calibrated? If it used coded meter strips, were they correlated to the code in the meter? Were the child’s hands clean and dry? There are many little, but important, things that you must do to assure the best accuracy of the glucose meters. So, they shouldn’t be used without specific instruction.

If there are questions about a child’s glucose, glucose from a vein and run in a laboratory should be part of the evaluation sooner or later.
