Question from Accrington, England:

My daughter has abscesses on her body. Her doctor is testing her sugar level since she has hypothyroidism. He thinks she may have diabetes. Are the signs of abscesses diabetes related?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It would be extremely rare for diabetes in childhood to show up only as skin abscesses. This is more likely related to chronic high sugar levels as often seen in type 2 diabetes in adults or in relation to chronic high sugar levels in already known diabetes. However, the testing for diabetes is pretty straight forward so whether or not diabetes exists would be not so hard to diagnose. There is no relationship with abscesses of the skin and thyroid problems.
