Meal Planning, Food and Diet
Question from Dixon, Illinois, USA:
My daughter has just been diagnosed with type 1. She is 20 and a college Sophomore. Her problem is eating healthy at school. She is required to have 3 snacks per day plus meals and it is very hard to find snacks that have the right carbs, and don’t need refrigeration. She also complains that food is taking over her life and she is afraid of getting fat. Any suggestions?
Answer:
Suggestions for snacks could be fresh fruit, low fat yogurt, some of the lower fat chips or crackers, rice cakes or pretzels. Some students find it handy to have a small refrigerator in their rooms for the snacks that need refrigeration.
It sounds as though she may need to make an appointment with her diabetes team to see if there could be a more flexible insulin regimen for her to use.
