Question from Morris Chapel, Tennessee, USA:

My daughter just had her first child (an 8 pound, 1 ounce girl), and the hospital watched her blood sugar while she was in the hospital. What should normal blood sugar values be for an infant?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is often routine to monitor blood sugars in the newborn, and it is extremely unlikely that it was done with any thought for neonatal diabetes which is very rare (about 1:400,000 births). Blood sugar levels, depending on the time since birth or a feeding, vary between 30 and 100 mg/dl [1.7 to 5.6 mmol/L].
