Diagnosis and Symptoms

Question from Lawndale, California, USA:

I took my nine year old daughter in for her physical in August 2003 and she was fine. By October 2003, she had lost a lot of weight. so I took her to the doctor. They hospitalized her right away and diagnosed her with type 1 diabetes. This seemed very fast to me. Could the diabetes have been diagnosed in August when she was taken in for her physical? Do you think they missed a test that could’ve diagnosed it sooner? How fast is the onset of diabetes type 1?

This is a typical scenario for developing diabetes. The symptoms of diabetes occur very gradually, sometimes over just a few weeks, and usually over a few months.
