Question from India:

If the joint space of the knee is much reduced (about more than 50 percent) due to being overweight by 100 kilograms (about 220 pounds), can mild diabetes cause an increase in the problem? The doctor suggests walking, but I think walking is harmful to such weight bearing and reduced joints.

Answer:

Obviously, exercise is beneficial in the treatment of elevated blood sugars and diabetes. If you cannot exercise due to other limitations (and osteoarthritis of the knee is a limitation), you may have to find another means of exercise that does not result in the weight bearing of walking. Such exercises may include cycling, rowing, weight lifting, swimming, etc.
