Question from Middleboro, Massachusetts, USA:
My four year old son has a problem with frequent eczema breakouts. Is this related to his diabetes in any way?
Answer:
Not in a direct way, but both problems are associated with abnormalities of the way the immune system reacts to the body’s own tissues. Interestingly, there is some evidence to suggest that atopic conditions such as eczema and asthma are actually less common in patients with type 1 diabetes. However, these are statistical associations and we all have patients with both problems. The usual problem is that a flare in eczema requires treatment with steroids and this, coupled with the metabolic stress and discomfort of a flare, knock blood sugar control off course.
