A friend of mine has a three year old daughter who recently had two seizure-like episodes. Her mother said that the daughter was in a fetal position and shaking uncontrollably for about a 10 minute period of time. The mother had the daughter taken to the hospital where she was evaluated. The doctors did an MRI, C-Scan and blood work and found nothing. They sent them home without a diagnosis and told my friend to keep an eye on her daughter. The mother had gestational diabetes and there is a family history of diabetes. Is it possible that this could have been a diabetic reaction? How can the mother monitor for diabetes IF it is a possibility?
Answer:
If the girl had diabetes, then a hypoglycemic convulsion is a possible explanation. If the girl did no have diabetes, then this is unlikely caused by diabetes. It would be prudent to have her evaluated by a pediatric neurologist.
