Alternative Therapies and Explanations
Question from Kochi, Kerala, India:
My granddaughter has had type 1 diabetes for the past 3 years. She is on insulin both morning and night — 20 units in the morning and 10 units in the night. Her blood sugar is under control. Is it possible for her to be without insulin if she takes to yoga and other exercises and diet control? Is it possible by any other means to make her pancreas functional? What is your advice regarding her diet? What tests do you advise to find out whether her pancreas is functional?
Answer:
Your granddaughter needs her insulin to survive — do not stop it. Exercise is good for her and will help the insulin to work properly. Care over her diet is also very important with emphasis on avoiding too much refined carbohydrate like sugar and eating plenty of rice, potato and bread. Her pancreas performs many functions and the other functions are unaffected by diabetes.
