Question from Panama City, Florida, USA:

My grandfather was just diagnosed with diabetes. Is there a list that includes what he can eat, including information about eating sweet stuff such as cookies, cakes and ice cream?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Ask the doctor to refer you to a dietitian in your vicinity who can help you with your questions. Your grandfather should speak with one, and it would help if you could attend as well.

Generally speaking, the diet for someone with diabetes is simply a healthy diet, guided by the Food Guide Pyramid. However, each individual has different needs, so it is always helpful to see a dietitian.

There are many things available to help with meal planning and choosing the right foods to eat. You might also want to check out Books for Parents, Adults and Older Kids or the American Diabetes Association website for the many books that are available.
