Question from Newfoundland, Canada:
My mother has had numerous symptoms of diabetes (i.e. thirst, sweating, etc.), and her blood sugars have been as high as 24 mmol/L [432 mg/dl] and as low as 4.1mmol/L [73.8 mg/dl]. This has been ongoing for a while, but her doctor does not seem very concerned.

It sounds like your mother has diabetes that needs better treatment. The American Diabetes Association recommendations state that if the hemoglobin A1c is more 1% above the upper limit of normal in the lab performing the test, further therapy should be added to her current regimen. If her physician does not address this, she may have to find someone else who will.
