Diagnosis and Symptoms

Question from Clinton Township, Michigan, USA:

My son nine year old son has been diagnosed borderline diabetic. His blood sugar was 147 mg/dl [8.2 mmol/L]. The doctor never told me to check his levels before meals or after and never put him on any medication. He never suggested a diet. Should I check his blood sugars? If so, how often? Should I monitor what he eats? Is there a need for concern with him being borderline?

Diabetes runs in my family, but not on my son’s dad’s side. The doctor has not told me anything and he is aware of this running in the family. I always thought if its juvenile diabetes, it can get worse or borderline. I’d appreciate any kind of advice you can give me about diet or medication.

I don’t know if this is related to him being borderline, but he has bad eyesight and has been wearing glasses since he was three.

I would suggest visiting with your pediatrician to have your many questions thoroughly addressed to your satisfaction. How you test, what medications you may be able to use, what diet you should try all depends on your son’s history and physical examination. Please make an appointment and visit with your pediatrician with a written list of questions for your pediatrician to address for you. They will also have access to any testing that has been done and can review the testing you’ve done at home, also.
