Question from Galloway, Ohio, USA:

My seven year daughter was just diagnosed with hypoglycemia, and we have been taking her snacks to school with doctor’s orders so that she may have them at a prescribed time. We have figured that when she is low, her initial tests show blood sugar level of about 58 mg/dl [3.2 mmol/L], and she is tired, has a fast heart rate, and is confused and grumpy. We have tried to make her teacher understand how important it is for her to eat, but every day this week the teacher has told me she forgot to feed her. What can I do to rectify this problem? We already know that it is affecting her schoolwork.

I would suggest that your daughter’s doctor discuss this with the school nurse, health clerk, or principal. It sounds as though the school is not adhering to your requests so I think you need to go up a step and have the doctor communicate with the school.
