Question from Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA:
My son broke his arm. Will having diabetes slow the healing process? Will the broken arm affect his blood sugar levels?
Answer:
Having diabetes should not affect the healing of his broken arm, but diminished activity plus the stress of any discomfort will tend to increase blood sugar levels.

Additional comments from Dr. Stuart Brink:
If his blood glucose levels are in reasonable range, then he should heal any fractures like most everyone else.

Additional comments from Dr. David Schwartz:
Assuming he is in pretty good control and this fracture was not a complex one (specifically where the bone was sticking out of the skin!), then the healing should be pretty much unaffected by diabetes. On the other hand, the pain, “stress” and other potential changes in his activity as a result of the fracture, may indeed allow the glucose readings to be higher.
