Question from Gold Bar, Washington, USA:
My six-year-old son will go ghostly white and throw up if he does not eat right before he goes to bed and if he doesn’t eat first thing in the morning. Could this be a warning sign of diabetes?

Not likely. It is pretty easy to check a glucose. Nausea and vomiting do occur with diabetes, usually with a very high glucose and increase urination. Please see our web page on Hyperglycemia and Ketone Testing for more information.

[Editor’s comment: You may also want to consult your pediatrician or a pediatric endocrinologist about both reactive and ketotic hypoglycemia, other possible causes of your son’s vomiting.
