Aches and Pains, Thyroid
Question from Richmond, Virginia, USA:
My daughter is 15 years, eight months old. She has had diabetes for almost four years and is on an insulin pump. Her control has been good. Recently, she has noticed more hair than usual on the bathroom floor after she blow dries her hair. It does not come out when you run your hands through it. Also, her menstrual periods, which started two years ago, are still not regular, although, recently, they have started to become heavier. She is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds and is an athlete. She is having problems with leg cramps and dry skin. She had blood work done in January 2006 and all was very good. The thyroid test was redone in April after her exam revealed an enlarged thyroid. This test was also negative. What should we be looking for?
Answer:
The work-up for an enlarged thyroid gland needs to include a thorough history and physical examination as well as, typically, consultation with a pediatric endocrinologist. They can best direct any therapy that might be needed and let you know about any testing that may be helpful. They will also be able to thoroughly answer any questions you have regarding an enlarged thyroid gland.
