Insulin Pumps, Other
Question from Sinclair, Maine, USA:
Our 12 year old grandson, who has type 1 diabetes and is on a pump, wants to visit us for two weeks, and I need a daily menu, recipes, and a list of foods he can eat. Where can I find the diet/menu/food program that I can use while he is here?
Answer:
Anyone with diabetes who uses an insulin pump has no dietary restrictions. As with any person, it is best to eat healthy foods, such as lean meats, vegetables, and fruits. However, you need to know his insulin to carbohydrate ratio (1 unit of insulin per 16 grams of carb, for example). When you serve a meal, you need to know the carbohydrate content of the foods, many of which are listed on the nutrition label.
We have an extensive listing of books which you can purchase, to help you. Some include recipes, fast food restaurants, and/or foods that do not come with a nutrition label, such as fruits and vegetables. Perhaps your grandson’s parents have these resources for you to borrow. If not, see Cookbooks and Nutrition Books.
In addition, you should have his parents or diabetes team advise you as to how to treat low and high blood sugars, and about what to do if the pump malfunctions.
