Hypoglycemia

Question from Wall, South Dakota, USA:

Our 13 year old daughter has been blacking out for about a month. She will blackout at times from 10 minutes to one hour. Her hands tingle, she feels dizzy, sometimes she has a headache, her face feels very hot, but her hands and feet well be ice cold. About two weeks ago, she start shaking having seizure-like symptoms during these episodes. While she was home on vacation, she never experienced a blackout. She was waking up at 8 or 8:30 am and eating three meals a day with some snacking in between. Now that school has started up, she eats about 7:00 am and has a little snack at about 9:00 am, and she has started blacking out again for only about two or three minutes. Could this be hypoglycemia? We’ve been to doctors but can’t seem to find an answer. During some of these time her blood sugar will be down to 60 mg/dl [3.3 mmol/L]. We think it’s her eating pattern.

I am unable to make any firm recommendations beyond the need for your daughter to be thoroughly checked out. Without much more information, I couldn’t even say what investigations she requires.
