Hypoglycemia
Question from Livingston, Montana, USA:
Our 15 month old son often wakes up in a “terrible mood” with constant screaming, he throws himself on the ground and won’t walk. Usually he is too upset to eat, however, once he has started eating he is back to his normal calm self. My wife has type 1 diabetes, so during on of his fits, we tested his blood sugar. He was 43, we are going to test him each morning for a week or so. Could the solution be as simple as making sure he eats before bed, or is this something that should be checked out since his mother is diabetic?
Answer:
It is not so uncommon for a 15 month old boy to experience morning hypoglycaemia while fasting. Eating before going to bed should avoid this problem. It will disappear as your boy will grow up.
You can have him checked once for autoantibodies to exclude the possibility of Type1A diabetes.
