Diagnosis and Symptoms
Question from Beijing, China:
Our family works and lives in China where little still is known about childhood diabetes, its good control and vitamins and supplements. Our child was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Please, let us know which tests prove if diabetes is type 1 or type 2 since my husband’s family has a history of type 2. Can you also recommend suitable vitamins, minerals and supplements for a child with diabetes?
Answer:
Most children who develop diabetes in China have what is called type 1A which is a disorder of the immune system and which can be positively identified by doing an antibody test. In point of fact, the treatment which is to keep blood sugars as near to normal as possible is not all that different between type 1 and type 2, though insulin will be essential for type 1 for the foreseeable future.
