Question from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia:

Our four year old grandson, who has had type 1 diabetes since one year of age, has now also been diagnosed with celiac disease, and we are searching the Internet for information, sources of books, etc., that cover the diet for a child with diabetes and celiac disease. Do you have any advice? Can you point us to some appropriate references?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

I am assuming that your grandson is already being looked after by a diabetes team that includes a dietitian. Changing to a gluten free diet can be trying, especially for someone with diabetes, so that it is important to have experienced help. Here are three titles that our dietitians use for children with diabetes and coeliac disease:

Kids with Celiac Disease by Danna Korn; Woodbine House, 6510 Bells Mill Rd, Bethesda,MD.U.S.A. 20817.
More from the Gluten Free Gourmet by Betty Hagman; Henry Holt & Co, New York.
The Gluten-free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy by Betty Hagman; Henry Holt, New York

There are a number of others that you can find by searching under ‘Diets/Cookbooks for Celiac Disease’ in Google. Your grandson’s parents need to have the principles of carbohydrate counting as well. You will also find a huge amount of useful information at The Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Page.
